History of Torres STEM
Torres STEM Academy opened on the Esteban E. Torres High School campus in 2010 with five pilot schools, through LAUSD's Public School Choice process, each school mirroring the Boston Pilot School Network's approach. The Pilot school model allows five autonomies: staffing, budget, curriculum and assessment, governance, and school calendar/scheduling. Each of the five pilot schools has its own LAUSD location code, meaning each is completely independent high schools. Torres STEM Academy originally opened as "Engineering and Technology Academy at Torres High School," but eventually the name slowly changed to better reflect the curriculum and vision of the school. The current student population of Torres STEM Academy is 375 students. Our mission is to graduate students who are college and career ready. Torres STEM High School seeks to develop students specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math, and foster a community of critical thinkers and innovators.
Pilot schools comply with all State and Federal Mandates.
